The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle (1) in which it is determined whether a turning process is initiated during travel of the motor vehicle (1) and whether in the process there is a risk of a collision with an oncoming road user (2). In the case of a risk of collision being determined an automatic braking intervention is triggered. In this context, a difference in speed and a maximum braking period are predefined and the automatic braking intervention is aborted if the velocity of the motor vehicle (1) has reduced by the speed difference during the automatic braking intervention or, on the other hand, if the duration of the automatic braking intervention reaches the predefined maximum braking duration. In addition, the invention relates to a driver assistance system for a motor vehicle (1) for carrying out the method.
