Provided is a backlight device which can be easily adapted to a large-size liquid crystal display device and can improve the display quality thereof while reducing the manufacturing costs for a direct-lit backlight device and a liquid crystal display device equipped with the backlight device. A channel-specific processing unit corresponding to each control channel connected to each of the light-emitting elements mounted on a light source mounting substrate is provided to acquire lighting control information, and signal transmission lines between driver devices and a light-emission control device are cascade-connected. The backlight device is configured by having an enable setting function for selecting any of the channel-specific processing units and setting the selected unit to an enabled state and an individual lighting control function for sending lighting control information to the channel processing unit in the enabled state and individually controlling lighting for the light-emitting element. The backlight device (BL1) is configured such that backlight scanning can be performed in synchronization with the scanning of a moving image regardless of the arrangement direction of the light source mounting substrate.
