Maleic anhydride is prepd. by catalytic pref. uranyl phosp. vapour phase oxidn. of benzene a 2-4C aliphatic hydrocarbon having one or two olefinic bonds, the 4C hydrocarbon being unbranched, or a 4-5C monoethylenically unsatd. aldehyde with its olefinic double bond in the beta-position relative to the carbonyl group, with the aid of a gas contg. free molecular O2 in the presence of a catalyst contg. uranyl ions.
