A method of re-evaluating signal reception by a digital TV receiver for a predetermined RF channel comprises configuring a smart (steerable, active) antenna, including at least a current reception direction s3810, and monitoring s3820 for a predetermined event, e.g. a periodic event, user initiated event, predetermined criterion or scheduled event. Then, when the event occurs, and for each of the current reception direction and available directions adjacent s3840 sides of the current direction: obtaining an estimate of an channel impulse response (CIR) from the receiver; finding a maximum value of the impulse response, for a main signal path; calculating a mean (average) of values of the channel impulse response comprising impulse response values for additional signal paths; calculating a quality value (Q factor) as the ratio of the maximum value to the mean of channel impulse response values, and; selecting the direction with the largest respective (e.g. average) quality value as the new reception direction. Response to scheduled events may be based on whether RF channels are being output for viewing or not. Gain values may be selected s3830 based on signal to noise ratio (SNR). |
