An energy harnessing device comprises a substantially helical conduit 38 which floats in a generally horizontal orientation in a body of moving water including regions of varying pressure such as waves. The conduit defines a fluid flow path along its length and comprises an inlet 20 and outlet 22. The conduit rotates about its longitudinal axis by the action of water of varying pressure, e.g. waves, moving in a direction towards the device and contacting the conduit and driving fluid(s) along the fluid flow path. The longitudinal axis can be maintained at a predetermined angle of around 5 to 75 ° relative to a plane orthogonal to the direction of water moving towards the device to maximise energy harnessing efficiency. The pitch of the helical conduit member may vary along its longitudinal axis to minimise the length of the device while still achieving high energy harnessing efficiency. Methods of harnessing energy from a body of water including regions of varying pressure are also described.
