A patient lifting and transfer device comprises a pair of vertical lift columns 20 having a horizontal bar 12 connected between the two columns and an elongate mobile wheeled trolley 30 mounted to a lower portion of each vertical lift column, wherein each trolley 30 can rotate about a vertical pivot axis between a first position in which the trolley extends generally perpendicular to the horizontal bar (as shown) and a second position where the mobile trolley extends generally parallel to the horizontal bar thereby reducing the width of the device. In one embodiment, each lift column 20 comprises upper and lower column portions and a lift actuator which enables the upper portion to be raised relative to the lower portion. The actuator may be mounted at the base of each column (as shown) or at the top adjacent the horizontal bar [see Figs 5-7]. The mobile trolleys 30 may comprise four arrayed wheels and one offset wheel, and may include locking means, e.g. a foot operated locking pawl, to lock the angular position of the trolley relative to the column [see Fig. 8]. The rotating mobile trolleys 30 help to provide a stable and secure lifting arrangement that is easy to manoeuvre, e.g. through doorways, and which is capable of efficient storage.
