The apparatus has switching unit (1) that is adjustable between two positions in which flow path (6) of exhaust gas is released and blocked to exhaust cleaning component (2) respectively. The cleaning component is blocked so that exhaust gas flows to flow path (7) in inflow channels (8) of heat exchanger (3). The gas is heated up and is fed through flow path (20) of cleaning component and leaves outflow (4) of heat exchanger after passage through exhaust gas purification unit (5). The cleaning component, heat exchanger and flow paths are integrated in compact gas treatment unit. An independent claim is included for method for operating exhaust gas purification apparatus.
