<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately measure the conveyance amount of the recording medium. <P>SOLUTION: A movement amount detection part of a recording medium conveying device includes: a rotary shaft that extends along the route of the endless belt; a base that is rotatably and pivotally supported by the rotary shaft; a guide shaft that is provided on the base in parallel with the rotary shaft; a scale part that slides following the endless belt by the guide shaft; a sensor part installed on the base to measure the movement amount of the scale part; a rotary drive source that rotates the base; and a driving device that returns the scale part from the predetermined position to the initial position. In the movement amount detection part, when the rotary drive source rotates the base ahead of the revolving motion of the endless belt at the initial position and makes the scale part engaged with the endless belt, after the scale part follows to the revolution of the endless belt, moves, and reaches the predetermined position, the rotary drive source rotates the base, releases the engagement of the scale part and the endless part.
