The invention relates to a process for the surface treatment of substrates made of aluminium or of aluminium alloys or of tin/chromium alloys, which makes it possible in particular to functionalize this surface in order to promote the adhesion with subsequent coatings, according to which the surface of the substrates is exposed to several successive plasmas generated at atmospheric pressure in suitable nitrogen-based gas mixtures.
