The device (2) has a compressor unit (6) i.e. linear piston compressor, for periodically compressing a working medium i.e. helium, by a compressor element e.g. piston (12), and metal membrane. An electrical hydrostatic drive unit (8) is magnetically or mechanically coupled with the compressor element. A hydraulic pump (32) is driven by an electromotor (30) and connected with a hydraulic cylinder (36). Movement direction of the hydraulic cylinder is controlled by rotation direction of the electromotor. An oil separator is provided downstream to the compressor unit. The compressor unit is designed as a conveying compressor unit. An independent claim is also included for a cooling device.
