The device (10) has a fuel cell stack (12) for generating electrical high-voltage and a main compressor (30) for supplying the fuel cell stack with oxidizing agent i.e. air, in nominal operation of the fuel cell stack. An electrically operable auxiliary compressor (28) is supplied with the oxidizing agent at low voltage by the fuel cell stack. The main compressor and the auxiliary compressor form a two-stage supply installation, where an exhaust opening of one of the two compressors is coupled with an intake port of another compressor.
