The main purpose of the present invention is to increase the cycle capacity retention rate of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. A positive electrode active material of the present invention is characterized by containing manganese dioxide that has a hexagonal crystal structure. A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery of the present invention comprises a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte; and the positive electrode comprises a positive electrode active material which contains manganese dioxide that has a hexagonal crystal structure.
