Thorium oxide and/or tantalum oxide is/are used as X-ray absorbing constituent(s) for irradiation-impermeable filler materials which can be used, in particular, in dentally strengthening materials. The filler materials contain from approx. 3% by weight to approx. 10% by weight, calculated in relation to the total filler material, of the X-ray-absorbing constituent, with the remainder being conventional particulate glass or silica, quartz or ceramic filler material. The irradiation- impermeable filler materials are insoluble and non- leachable in alkaline, acid or neutral aqueous environments, are essentially non-toxic, are either essentially colourless or translucent and are compatible with acrylic monomers and other polymerizable binding agent systems.
