The invention relates to a high-pressure discharge lamp for vehicle headlamps comprising a lamp vessel unit (19), which is fixed to the lamp base (3) and contains a discharge vessel (10), with an asymmetrically designed starting aid coating (107) being arranged on the surface of said discharge vessel, and a metal holder (2) for the lamp vessel unit (1), wherein an operating apparatus for the high-pressure discharge lamp is accommodated in the lamp base (3), which operating apparatus is designed in such a way that its electrical ground reference potential is connected to the metal holder (2) and voltage pulses of negative polarity are applied to the electrode (12) near to the base of the high-pressure discharge lamp during the starting phase.
