<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator, an image display apparatus and a polarization conversion/diffusion member capable of more reliably reducing speckle noise. <P>SOLUTION: An illuminator comprises: a laser light source for emitting laser light; and a polarization converter 43 having a plurality of areas for converting the laser light emitted from the laser light source into the laser light having a plurality of kinds of polarization directions to exit.
