PURPOSE:To surely perform identification of different kinds of changeable font elements by an arrangement wherein an optical mark is put on each font element of an impact printer according to its kind, and the mark is detected by a sensor means on the frame side. CONSTITUTION:In an impact printer wherein a control program is changed according to the kind of exchangeable font elements, a mark in the form of a slit 12 is bored in a disc part 41 of each font element 4 according to its kind, while a light emitting element 13 and a light receiving element 14 are provided on the carriage side and the frame side, respectively, corresponding to the slit 12. With the font element 4 being rotated, a light passing through the slit 12 is detected so as to automatically identify the kind of the front element. By so doing, it becomes possible to run the mark detection without suffering any influence of vibrations due to movement of a carriage. |
