PURPOSE: A parking assist system is provided to select an automatic parking mode and to automatically determine a parking state. CONSTITUTION: A parking assist system which is able to select an automatic parking mode comprises: an image acquiring unit(100), a parking lot searching unit(200), a distance sensing unit(300), and a control unit(400). The image acquiring unit obtains an external image of a car. The parking lot searching unit detects a target parking lot referring to the external image. The distance sensing unit senses the size of an outside obstacle. The distance sensing unit is an ultrasonic wave sensor, a laser range finder, or a laser scanner.
