A method for determining a value for an electrical output of a converter of renewable energy comprises obtaining a signal representing the electrical output of the converter wherein that electrical output has an initial value; applying a pulse signal to the signal representing the electrical output that has a positive portion TA and a negative portion TB, where one transitions immediately into the other; obtaining a measurement of electrical power produced by the converter during application of the pulse signal, removing the pulse signal and then obtaining a measurement of electrical power produced by the converter in the period TD when the pulse signal is absent that can be after a dwell time TC. An error value is determined from the obtained electrical power measurements and that error value is applied to the initial value to obtain a target value for the electrical output of the converter. The converter can be a solar to electrical energy converter and the electrical output represented by the signal can be a voltage. The electrical output of the converter can be controlled to substantially equal the target value which, before application of the pulse, can be the initial value. Power measurements can be averaged over parts of the positive, negative and absent pulse periods that are equal and can produce an irradiation power change value. The method aims to achieve maximum power point tracking of a photovoltaic array despite variation in temperature and the irradiation received from the Sun.
|
