The method involves determining a multiplicator based on route distance for an amount of increase or decrease, where the multiplicator is multiplied by step size (33). A touch-sensitive control-and observation device (1) i.e. industrial touchscreen panel, is operated with a touch sensor, which detects multiple contacts. An evaluation is made to check whether more than one control object (3) is advanced to a control element (2) i.e. potentiometer. A number of advanced control objects (3a-3c) is evaluated, where scaling and step size are adapted based on the number of objects. The control objects are formed as fingers of a human hand.
