The variable storage compartment system is based on the idea that storage compartments are obtainable in different sizes, all having the same locking and retaining mechanism. Each motorcyclist can select the storage compartment corresponding most closely to his requirements and can mount and fix this in a relatively simple manner to his fuel tank. This storage compartment system combines the advantages of the hitherto known motorcycle cases, namely stability and the ability to be locked, with those of the hitherto known rucksacks mounted over the tank, namely the attachment position favourable for handling of the cycle during riding, without exhibiting the disadvantages thereof. The retention takes place at the front by means of a rail attached to the storage compartment, which rail is pushed onto a supporting tube attached to the fuel tank. At the rear, either a claw is clamped around a further tube, or a closure system is used in which one or more pins snap into eyes and are secured there in each case by means of a tumbler. At the top a closable flap can be opened in order to load the storage compartment.
