A permanent magnet assembly (16) comprising a base plate (11) and at least one permanent magnet piece (10) which is attached to the base plate (11) is disclosed. The at least one permanent magnet piece (10) is covered by a flanged cover (13), which is designed to be slid into at least one pre-shaped groove of an electrical machine (6). Moreover, a method for fixing at least one permanent magnet piece (10) onto a base plate (11) in an element (14) of an electrical machine (6) is described. The method comprises the steps of placing at least one permanent magnet piece (10) onto the base plate (11), covering the permanent magnet piece (10) with flanged cover (13), and fixing the assembly of the base plate (11), the permanent magnet piece (10) and the flanged cover (13) to the element (14) by inserting at least one flange (12) of the flanged cover (13) into a corresponding groove of the element (14).
