An axle assembly 1, for example for a truck, has an axle 5 and exactly two wheels (11, Figure 6), each mounted on an end portion 4 of axle 5, and for each wheel a hub 3 and a brake 2. Each hub 3 has a hub flange 6 having a substantially planar outer flange surface 7 facing the corresponding wheel. Each wheel may have a substantially flat wheel disc (10, Figure 6), or a disc (10, Figure 7) with a ridge portion (13, Figure 7) surrounding a wheel mounting face (12, Figure 7). A wheel mounting face of each wheel may be approximately 12.5 cm from the wheel centre. Advantageously, the hub flange offset and wheel face mounting offset are small, providing a lightweight, strong, robust and aerodynamic axle assembly. The assembly is particularly suitable for non-steer axles having wide-base single wheels.
