An emergency brake for a vehicle travelling over a surface is provided. The emergency brake comprises: a projectile 31-4 that is made to penetrate a road surface 31-5 when deployed; a projecting mechanism called a gun 31-2, attached to the vehicle to project said projectile; a cable 31-10 one end of which is attached to the projectile 31-4; and a control system 31-6, 31-7, 31-8. A cable restraining system 31-12, 31-13, 13-14 is attached to the vehicle to controllably release the cable 31-10 when the projectile 31-4 has penetrated the surface 31-5. The projectile 31-4 has means 31-9 to prevent it from being pulled out of the surface 31-5, even if the attached cable 31-10 is pulled by the vehicle's momentum at desired speed. Upon a command to stop the vehicle's travel, a controller 31-6 activates the gun 31-2 to project the projectile 31-4 into the surface 31-5, pulling the cable 31-10 along, and directs the restraining system 31-12, 31-13, 31-14 to release a desired cable length without restraint, restrained release for another desired cable length, then stop release, thus the vehicle is forced to slow and or halt, without relying on surface friction. |
