The object of the invention is to implement an adjustment to the filling level after the filling process in the event of overfilling by the introduction of inert gas into the bottle without impairing the pressure system of the filling machine while making very sparing use of inert gas and reducing losses of filling material. An essential feature is that after pouring into the lower filling valve region when the return gas valve is closed and the inert gas source is closed, a metered quantity of inert gas which is at a pressure which is greater than the loading gas pressure by an adjustable differential amount is introduced into the annular boiler, the froth formed during pouring is compressed and, when the return gas duct has been opened, the adjustment amount of liquid is forced through the return gas duct back into the annular boiler, after which the return gas duct is closed. The invention is used for pouring liquids into bottles and relates to a method in which adjustment of the filling level follows the filling process. <IMAGE>
