<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a user recognize a cleaning period about a thermal recording device. <P>SOLUTION: A merchandise selling data processing system of an embodiment comprises a merchandise selling data processing terminal and a card writer. The card writer includes a thermal recording device, a detector, and output means, and the merchandise selling data processing terminal includes a warning device, calculation means, and control means. The thermal recording device is configured to record information in a card by using the generation of heat of a recording head. The detector is configured to detect the temperature of the recording head. The output means is configured to output temperature information relating to the temperature detected by the detector to the merchandise selling data processing terminal. The warning device is configured to perform a warning operation to urge the execution of the cleaning of the recording head. The calculation means is configured to calculate the cumulative time of high temperature periods when the recording head is put in a high temperature state on the basis of the temperature information.
