The invention relates to a linear potentiometer which is operated under oil, especially for hydraulic cylinders having internally located path deformation, a wiper being used for the potentiometer pick-off. It has been found that the tongues of the wiper tend to lift off at high speeds, which leads to disturbances in operation. This is supposedly caused by the dynamic formation of a wedging effect which occurs as a result of the relative speed between the oil and tongue when a tongue is operated in a pulling manner. In the case of opposite movements, that is to say in the case of a pressing method of operation, wear has been found which is greater than that in the case of linear potentiometers which are operated dry. This amazing effect in the case of oil lubrication can be explained by the fact that ram pressures in the sense of excessive contact pressure act on a tongue which runs obliquely in the movement direction. According to the invention, these drawbacks are intended to be avoided by the tongues being arranged inside enclosed cavities which are bounded on the one hand by the linear potentiometer and on the other hand by walls of guide grooves and/or a sliding element which is connected to the wiper and is moved together with it, consists of a non-conductive material and slides on the linear potentiometer.
