In a motor vehicle seat a backrest can be pivoted forwards with respect to a seat together with a hinge fitting provided for adjusting the inclination of the backrest. In the position of the use of the seat, a part (11) of the hinge fitting which is pivotally connected to the seat (10) has a rear portion braced against an abutment (13) on the seat (10) and is retained by a catch hook (14) disposed pivotally on the hinge part (11). The catch hook (14) is secured in a locked position by a control lever (22). A hook-shaped jaw (16) of the catch hook (14) engages behind the abutment (13) with a bearing face (18) which is at a shallow angle so as not to be self-locking and a spring member (27) biases the control lever (22) in the locking direction, has a spring leg (30) which engages with initial tension over the abutment (13) while resting thereon and is also effective to maintain the control lever (22) in a release position by engaging in a portion (34) of a slot (33) in the control lever (22). <IMAGE>
