<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight unit in which display quality can be improved and to provide a display device equipped with the same. <P>SOLUTION: The display device includes a display panel for displaying images, a backlight unit supplying light to the display panel, and an upper cover as well as a lower cover. The upper cover, as well as the lower cover, contains the display panel and the backlight unit. The backlight unit includes a plurality of light guide plates arranged separated from each other, a plurality of light source parts, an optical element, and a light diffusion member covering a separated space between the light guide plates. The light diffusion member includes a diffusion part and a support part. The diffusion part faces the optical element, is superposed on the space between the light guide plates and diffuses light generated from the light source parts and then emitted from the space between the light guide plates in a direction of the optical element.
