The terminal (1) has a rectangular shaped opening (2) for passing a payment unit in paper form e.g. bank bill, from the outside to the inside of the terminal. A drive device drives the bank bill according to a defined path, and a scanning unit (7) includes a scanning surface for scanning a side of the bank bill. The opening is arranged such that its longitudinal axis of symmetry is vertical, where the scanning unit is placed at the defined path such that the scanning surface is vertical.
