<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically determine overflowing of any character string out of an indication cell and to automatically correct the overflowing in an image processing apparatus such as an ultrasonic diagnosing apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: At a preliminary stage of generating a bit map image, pixel values to be assigned to characters, pixel values to be assigned to inside indication cells, and pixel values to be assigned to outside indication cells are differentiated from one another. At the stage of evaluating the bit map image, pixels constituting characters are selected as pixels to be noted, their surroundings are referenced and, if any pixel outside a cell is found, the presence of overflowing is determined.
