The input signal (Vi) to the recording system (120) is fed to a converter (121) which consists of an input buffer (126), microprocessor (127) and two series to parallel converters (128, 129), converting the signal into two bit streams (i1, i2) each having a bit rate lower than that of the input signal. The two signals are fed to conventional 'CIRC' encoders (13a, 13b) in the head drive systems (1a, 1b).
