The method involves supplying power in an electric motor (3) by a power supply device (6) for driving a rotor of the vacuum pump (1). The pulse width modulation signals are generated during a start-up phase of the electric motor, by which the electric motor is actuated. A current limiting unit (12) is activated during the start-up phase of the electric motor for limiting the electric power flow. The current limiting unit is deactivated after attaining a normal current of the electric motor. The ratio of the pulse duration to the period of pulses is regulated to 100 percentage during the start-up phase of the electric motor. An independent claim is included for a device for controlling a vacuum pump driven by an electric motor.
