The method involves utilizing a data processing system (1), which has an access to an associated digital documentation system (3), rules for design verification (4) and CAD-data (12). A user is allowed to manually select one of components to be utilized in a prototype. The data processing system automatically generates multiple and all possible prototype variants (8) in association with the rules and CAD-data based on the digital documentation system, where the variants comprise selected component. A structural module (7) is provided with the data set compiled by a search module (6). An independent claim is also included for a computer program having a set of instructions for performing a method for generating digital prototype of a complex device.
