摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem: since a controlled variable (amount of a VVT advance angle ) used for variable valve timing control is not normally calculated heretofore when a cam angle sensor breaks down, a variable valve timing control is inhibited by forcibly returning an intake valve to the most delayed angle position, and as a result, it is unable to reap the benefit such as output performance compatible with fuel economy performance which are a feature of the variable valve timing mechanism. <P>SOLUTION: A control device is provided for controlling the variable valve timing mechanism by calculating the amount of the VVT advance angel based on a crank angle sensor signal and a cam angle sensor signal. In the control device, when it is determined that the cam angle sensor breaks down, the amount of the VVT advance angle is calculated by a seating signal of the intake valve which occurs in a knock sensor signal and the variable valve timing control is performed based on the amount of the VVT advance angle. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
