The present invention is directed to novel lactoferrin fragments that are characteristic of inflammation during resolution and uses thereof. The present invention provides diagnostic compositions and methods for assessing the presence or absence of resolving inflammation and for monitoring the progression of inflammatory resolution in a subject. Also disclosed are methods for treating a subject having an inflammatory disease, comprising determining whether the subject has inflammation in resolution by determining the molecular weight of lactoferrin fragments.
