A device to allow manual change of a relative longitudinal position between the housing member and the elongated rod member of a slack adjuster without unpinning or removal of the slack adjuster from the railcar brake rigging includes a first member secured in at least semi-permanent connection with an end of the slack adjuster, a second member secured in at least semi-permanent connection to the railcar brake rigging, a third member secured to said first member and encasing a portion of a second member therewithin, a first plurality of ratchet teeth provided on the second member, a second plurality of ratchet teeth provided in the third member in operative alignment with the first plurality of ratchet teeth, and a bias member axially disposed in a space between the first and the second members.
