An aid primarily for assisting persons of limited ability to climb stairs comprises an elongate channel member (10,31) defining therein a channel (11) of generally uniform transverse section, a gripper member (17) including a handle (18,30) and, rigidly connected to the handle (18,30), a locking member (22,23,39) located within the channel (11). The handle (18) and locking member (22,23,39) are pivotal together about an axis extending transversely of the length of the channel member (10,31) on the application to the handle (18) of a force directed substantially parallel to the length of the channel (11), the pivoting movement being between a first position in which the locking member (22,23,39) is free to slide along the channel (11), and a second position in which the locking member (22,23,39) applies frictional force to an inner surface (12,13,44) of the channel member (10,31) and thereby prevents movement of the locking member (22,23,39) along the channel (11). <IMAGE> |
