Use of latex barrier tiecoat with mastic coatings.

A method for improving the quality of a mastic coating system by using a latex barrier tiecoat which is composed of a water-insoluble latex polymer and a multivalent metal ion. The tiecoat is applied to a substrate and then a mastic coating is applied to the tiecoat to yield a mastic coating system having excellent resistance to blistering when the mastic coating system is exposed to long-term ponded water. Certain latex polymer compositions containing multevalent metal ions are useful as tiecoat compositions between a substrate and a subsequently applied mastic coating, especially to provide increased adhesion and blistering resistance when the coating is exposed to ponded water.
