Carboxylic acid chlorides of formula R-CO-Cl (I) in which R = 1-30C alkyl, 2-30C alkenyl or 2-30C alkynyl, are prepd. from carboxylic acids R-COOH (II) and phosgene COCl2 (III) in the presence of a catalyst adduct of phosgene and N-N-disubstd. formamides of formula R1R2NCHO (IV), in which R1 and R2 = 1-3C alkyl or R1 and R2 may together = a 4C or 5C alkylene chain which may be interrupted by an O atom or an N atom carrying a 1-3C alkyl or CHO gp., in which the (IV) is laden with 20-70 mol.% phosgene, and the (I) is recovered by phase sepn.
