An adapter (70, 70''', 70''''') for a power tool (10) powered by a detachable battery pack (40) comprises means (74, 91-94) for detachably connecting to only the power tool, a controller (72), at least one memory and/or storage device (74) in communication with the controller, and at least one communication port (75) configured or adapted to transmit electrical communications from the adapter controller (72) to a controller (12) located in the power tool and vice versa. The adapter is further adapted such that, when a battery pack (40), which also includes a controller (42), is connected to the power tool (10), a communication path is established whereby the battery pack controller communicates with the adapter controller via the power tool controller.
