The print head carriage (3) is associated with an inking ribbon guide (89) formed by two symmetrical mirror-image locking devices (14,15) which pivot about parallel axes (16) between three positions. In the first position the ribbon (5) is held well clear of the forward part (4a) of the print head, which is unlocked and accessible for removal and replacement. In the second position the head is locked and the ribbon (5) is stretched taut so that the ribbon cassette can be withdrawn and replaced. In the third position the ribbon and the head are brought together for the purpose of printing.
