A disc determination device (28) is provided in a disc device (100) provided with an optical pickup (10) capable of shining a laser on an optical disc (50) that has a data recording surface (51) and a label surface (52) on opposite sides from each other. This disc determination device is provided with a reading means (38) and a determining means (38). If an optical disc in the disc device is oriented such that the data recording surface thereof is on the side where the optical pickup is, the reading means reads unique information that is recorded on said data recording surface and is unique to said optical disc. In accordance with the read unique information, the determining means determines whether or not the optical disc in the disc device is one that allows drawing on the label surface thereof.
