A neuromuscular electrical stimulation system comprising one or more electrodes (12) coupled to a pulse generator (10), whereby said one or more electrodes are configured to be implanted in tissue associated with local segmental control of the spine and the pulse generator is configured to deliver electrical stimulation to said one or more electrodes at a level and duration sufficient to cause activation of nerve fibers associated with said tissue.
