Method of operating a fuel metering valve

Disclosed is a method of operating a fuel metering valve 185 of an internal combustion engine 110. The method comprises the steps of determining a target value F1 of a fuel flow-rate through the fuel metering valve 185, using the target value of the fuel flow-rate as input of a correlation function CF that yields as output a corre­sponding value C1 of an energizing electrical current to be supplied to the fuel metering valve 185. The fuel metering valve 185 is supplied with an energizing electrical current having the value CO yielded by the correlation function CF. The correlation function CF is determined using a standard function SF representative of a nominal relationship between the fuel flow-rate through the fuel metering valve 185 and the en­ergizing electrical current supplied thereto. The method uses at least one empirically determined point A, B, C of the correlation function CF to correct the standard function SF so that it goes through said at least one empirically determined point A, B, C. The method may be used in a high pressure, common rail, direct injection fuel injection system.
