This method finds application in glass-making. It avoids the use of toxic hydrofluoric acid. Matting involves a treatment with a matting solution made up of 100 parts by weight of ammonium hydrogen fluoride - ammonium fluoride solution containing 30 - 35 percent of fluorine ions and 35 - 45 parts by weight of concentrated sulphuric acid or 30 - 42 parts by weight of concentrated hydrochloric acid.
