An illumination device 1 has a light source 4and a wavelength conversion element 2, which comprises a region with a wavelength conversion material 7, such as phosphor, for absorbing the light and emitting light of a different wavelength. The conversion element and the light source are movable relative to one another so that the region is exposed to the light at different times and in a progressive relative scanning movement. The movement helps prevent local heating of the phosphor to improve efficiency. |
