PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device of a TN mode having high front contrast and wide viewing angle characteristics (downward gradation inversion and a color change depending on a viewing angle are reduced). SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device of the TN mode has a liquid crystal cell (6), a pair of display surface side and rear surface side polarizing plates (8b, 8a) disposed on both sides of the liquid crystal cell, respectively and a backlight (BL) disposed on an outer side of the rear surface side polarizing plate (8a), wherein the display surface side polarizing plate (8b) has a light diffusion film (7), diffused light of the light diffusion film (7) has such a profile that scattering light intensity in 30°polar angle direction in an azimuthal direction in which scattering intensity is made to be the maximum is≥0.05% relative to light intensity at 0°emission angle (film normal direction) and front contrast is≥800.
