The cellular structure is made from metal foil and has a cell shape designed to absorb impacts in the expected directions. The cells are rectangular and can be curved around fittings. The metal wall thickness to cell length ratio is between 1:10 and 1:20. Aluminium or steel is used and secured by adhesive, electric welding etc.. The structure is covered with a porous cladding to prevent compression of trapped air on impact. Shaped sections replace damping layers and supplement shock absorbing layers in a vehicle.
