A digital broadcasting system and a processing method thereof are provided to transmit additional data such as enhanced data and known data in a first enhanced data packet form after inserting the additional data to a payload region within a TS(Transport Stream) and transmit the additional data in a second enhanced data packet form after inserting the additional data to an adaptation field within the TS so that the digital broadcasting system can be strong against an error during transmission of the additional data through a channel and be compatible with an existing VSB(Vestigial Side Band) receiver. A transmitting method comprises the following steps of: receiving enhanced data with information and performing at least one error correction encoding, interleaving, and bite extension; generating and outputting the outputted enhanced data into one of a first enhanced data packet and a second enhanced data packet; multiplexing and outputting the first and second enhanced data packets and a main data packet according to a predefined multiplexing rule; and performing at least encoding of an N/M coding rate, wherein N and M are natural numbers and N is smaller than M, second error correction encoding, and Trellis encoding for enhanced data within the first and second enhanced data packets multiplexed and outputted. |
