PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte for a battery which is free from the risk of firing/catching fire, and to provide a nonaqueous electrolyte battery having the nonaqueous electrolyte and high safety. SOLUTION: The nonaqueous electrolyte for the battery contains an ionic liquid comprising a cation portion and an anion portion, a supporting salt, the cation portion of the ionic liquid contains phosphorus and nitrogen, and the nonaqueous electrolyte battery is equipped with the nonaqueous electrolyte, a positive electrode, and a negative electrode. The nonaqueous electrolyte for the battery is preferably composed of only the ionic liquid and the supporting salt. The ionic liquid preferably has a double bond between phosphorus and nitrogen.
